Harrogate probably owes its reputation for affluence to its founders. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, rich Victorians would make the journey to this burgeoning northern town to “take the waters”, said to cure all sorts of maladies.

And, of course, while they were in town, it was also the tradition to promenade along the colonnades of the verdant Valley Gardens or in the Winter Gardens, wealthy parents looking for suitors for their daughters from among the splendidly dressed military officers who also journeyed to the town for just that reason.
The Winter Gardens may now be a Wetherspoons pub and medical science has advanced to such a degree that only the foolhardy taste the sulphurous water which still flows from a tap outside the Royal Pump Room Museum but – despite 1975s architects dumping one or two concrete high-rises right in the middle of its historic splendour – Harrogate has managed to hang on to its genteel image.

Mimicking the grandeur of Bath, properties close to the centre tend to be three- or four-storey Victorian town houses with high ceilings and arched windows. The exclusive Duchy estate also boasts some of the most extravagant examples of Victorian and period architecture – although, sadly, many have now been divided into apartments.

But, around the outskirts of the town, more modern developments have sprung up, offering a wide variety of property, from one-bed affordable housing to impressive, detached homes with extensive gardens.

Although not on a main line, Harrogate is connected to both Leeds and York by rail – both approximately a half-hour journey away –essential to the town’s conference industry which, in turn, provides clientele for an impressive and cosmopolitan array of restaurants and bars. Leeds-Bradford Airport is also just a short drive away while the A1 (M) is within easy reach from the town’s southern bypass

However, it’s the proximity of the Yorkshire Dales which also makes Harrogate such a desirable place to live, with beautiful Nidderdale, Wharfedale and the Washburn Valley within easy reach by car or bicycle.

Combine ease of access, low crime statistics, reasonable employment opportunities in tourism and conference trade and spectacular Yorkshire scenery and perhaps it’s easy to see why a Rightmove survey has named the town the happiest in Britain for three years in a row…
