LET’S MOVE TO … REDCAR
When it comes to east coast seaside resorts, Redcar tends to get second billing to the more famous Yorkshire destinations such as Scarborough, Whitby or Bridlington.
Its eight miles of sandy beaches and its history as a place where the Victorian gentry would promenade to take in the benefits of bracing North Sea air are largely overlooked, probably because of its tends to get lumped in with Middlesbrough and its more industrial heritage.
It’s certainly true that Redcar owes its growth to steel and iron and the foundries where so many locals were employed. But, since the opening of the Middlesbrough to Redcar railway in the mid-1850s, the local economy has relied on a heavy dollop of tourism and the front is endowed with as many amusement arcades and fairground rides as you would expect from any English seaside resort.
Did you know, for example, that TV entertainer and game show host Larry Grayson first coined his famous “Shut that door” catchphrase during a Coatham Pier show when a stage door was left open, allowing the wind from the North Sea to blow in? Did you know location shots for Oscar winner Atonement were filmed in the town, or that King Edward VII was a regular visitor.
So, if it’s been good enough for royalty, Hollywood and a famous BBC entertainer, maybe Redcar deserves a second look – both as a place to live and a place to visit.
A quick glance in the window at any Redcar estate agents will demonstrate that property can be reasonably priced. There may not be as much choice as you would anticipate in a big city but £250,000 could be enough to buy a three-bedroom home with a sea view, while £300,000 and above would probably purchase a substantial family house with gardens. But don’t forget online agents like us will also have property to offer so a search on Google for “estate agents Redcar” or “online estate agents Redcar” could net you a few more homes to browse. But, whoever you choose, one legacy of the town’s Victorian past you are likely to notice is that many properties are larger than average and stand in impressive grounds, surrounded by lots of green space.
There are plenty of local amenities to enjoy too, including the racecourse, a speedway circuit – home to the Redcar Bears – a high street with all the usual brands and names, a leisure centre, The Regent cinema, three separate railway stations, a college of further education, three secondary schools and 11 primary schools, the town’s own radio station and a museum which is home to the oldest lifeboat in the world.
So, if you thought you knew Redcar, maybe it’s time to think again. If you think we might be able to help with either buying or selling property, feel free to drop us a line or give us a call. Don’t forget we offer a free online valuation as well as our unique no-quibble, money-back guarantee.
