A BEGINNERS GUIDE TO RIGHTMOVE
A VERY USEFUL TOOL INDEED.
Although it’s now part of everyday life, not everyone is comfortable when it comes to going online. No matter how simple the design, website home pages can still be a scary place for those who worry that one wrong click will see them lost in a labyrinth of information or even that, somehow, they’ll manage to break something.
If you’re an internet-savvy millennial then we’d suggest you click away now – but if you’re not and you’d like a little hand-holding before you take a deep breath and visit the Rightmove property portal, read on…
At first, the landing page – the first one which opens when you search www.rightmove.co.uk – can seem a little daunting as there are so many options but it’s best to start with an idea of what information you’re actually looking for first.
Homes for sale: That’s easy. In the middle of the page is a search bar beneath the headline “Find Your Happy” and all you need to do is type in a place name or a post code. When you press enter, a few more boxes will appear allowing you to refine you search but, if you want to see everything available, just click away on the blue “Find Properties” button anyway and – voila!
Find an agent: Do you want to see what an estate agent who has been recommended to you has been up to recently? Just go to the top of the landing page and click on “Find Agent”. You’ll be taken to a microsite where you can click on other buttons which allow you to see what they’ve sold recently, what properties they have to offer right now, a little bit more about the company and even how to contact them. Simples.
Regional searches: If you want to start with a wider search than a town or a specific agent, you can search for UK property by region too. Just click on the country of your choice beneath the headline halfway down the page which says “Property Maps”. You’ll then be shown a map divided into regions. Just click on the one you want and you’ll be given more specific location choices and you can then use filters to view homes which match your requirements.
Sold House Prices: This is particularly useful if you want to check if the asking price on a property you’re interested in – or of the asking price you’re thinking of setting – is realistic. Just click on the heading “Sold House Prices” on the left of the screen two-thirds of the way down the home page and, again, you can either enter a specific street or a postcode. A list will then be displayed of the price homes sold in that location actually fetched – not the price they were advertised at on the market.
Discovering the right location for you based on your budget: Not everyone has the luxury of being able to pick exactly where they want to live; jobs, family commitments or other personal considerations keep many of us tied to a particular location. But, if you do have a little flexibility, there’s a button at the centre of the landing page with the headline “Where Can I Live”. Click on “Discover Your Perfect Location” beneath it, and you’ll be invited to create a Rightmove account. It’s a simple process which involves entering your name, email address and creating a personal password but, if you don’t want to be included on the site’s database, make sure you click on the option which will ensure your inbox doesn’t receive regular updates on properties, as well and offers and news. Once you’ve done that, you have to answer a number of questions by clicking boxes on the left of the screen and you’ll then be shown a series of postcodes shaded in blue on a map which fit your criteria. Click on any of them on the map, and you’ll be shown a list of properties in that area which match your budget. Nifty.
Information of schools: If you want information on schools, start by searching for property first. Under each house shown which matches your criteria, there will be a School Checker tab beneath the images of the property. If you click on that, you will be able to see a map with numbers showing school locations. Click on the number and you will be shown information about the relevant school, including Ofsted ratings and its admissions policy.
There are a few more functions on the website too but we hope that’s enough to get you started and perhaps to give you the confidence to investigate further. But, if there’s anything else you feel we might be able to do to help, don’t hesitate to drop us a line or give us a call. You never know, as an estate agent with properties nationwide, we may even have just what you’re looking for.
