LET’S MOVE TO … RICHMOND
Something Yorkshire estate agents will tell you is that, when it comes to attractive market towns to live in, North Yorkshire has a few to offer. Look at Helmsley, Knaresborough, Bedale or Masham for example or even Northallerton, Malton, Middleham, Leyburn or Boroughbridge.
But some would argue that particular list misses out the jewel in the crown. Standing astride the River Swale and in the shadow of its famous Norman castle, Richmond should have pride of place.
In the Heart of Yorkshire
With such a rich heritage, it’s hard to argue against Richmond’s claim to be at the top of the list of places to live or visit. As the gateway to Swaledale – which many would say is Yorkshire’s most scenic – the town does enjoy a splendid location. It’s not too far to the famous Catterick racecourse, the monastic ruins at Easby Abbey, or the peace and tranquillity of James Herriot’s countryside either.
But, although Richmond market place is frequented often by tourists from all over the world, any Richmond estate agents would tell you it’s also a great place to live.
It has its own secondary school – rated good by Ofsted in January 2017. There’s a swimming pool which has produced Olympic stars, museums and the quaint (and tiny) Georgian Theatre Royal. Darlington and its high street shops is an easy drive up the recently upgraded A1 while the retail parks at Catterick Garrison are even closer.
Property in Richmond
A quick online search using “estate agents Richmond” or on property portals such as Rightmove or Zoopla will soon demonstrate that, despite its idyllic location, homes in the area remain comparatively reasonably priced compared to the big cities. A characterful, detached three-bedroom home in the middle of town for example can cost in the region of £400,000 or even more. But there are plenty of more modern detached homes on the newer estates on the edge of town priced around the £250,000 mark too. A terrace might even be offered for £150,000 or even less, depending on condition.
So, in conclusion, if you’re looking for North Yorkshire market town properties and trawling the online estate agents Richmond is not a bad place to start.
It might be small but, in our opinion, it’s also perfectly formed.
